Blue Monday: how to beat the January slump

The 21st of January, otherwise known as Blue Monday – is commonly thought to be the most depressing day of the year. And while the equation used to calculate when it falls may actually be pseudoscience, there’s no doubt that dark days, grey weather and dashed hopes of sticking to that New Year’s resolution all can make for a glum start to the year. So here are three simple ways to help beat that slump.

Take a picnic blanket (and a coat)

It’s known that short days and long nights can cause feelings of depression for some people, commonly known as seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. Following the photon-count hypothesis – which states that fewer photons hit the retina during winter – light therapy is the most widely used treatment for SAD. And as little as 30 minutes of light can be all that’s needed. We suggest taking your lunch outside, of course you may want to pack a coat and scarf too.

Spin your way to success

A cold and damp run around the park hardly sounds enticing, but sadly we still can’t do much about the weather. However, continued persistence to an exercise programme is a proven way to stave off depression. So try signing up for an indoor exercise class to escape the rain, and the motivation of the instructor will definitely help! Even the music used in these types of classes can help focus the mind and distract from the fatigue experienced during exercise.
